Biography

Lynda H. Powell, PhD, MEd, is the Charles J. and Margaret Roberts Professor of Preventive Medicine, Medicine (Cardiology), Behavioral Sciences, and Pharmacology, and is chairperson of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. is an internationally recognized expert in the development, design, and conduct of behavioral clinical trials. She has been the Principal Investigator of five major behavioral clinical trials, is currently leading a multi-site behavioral trial aimed at optimizing lifestyle for the purpose of producing a sustained remission of the metabolic syndrome, and will publish, in 2020, the first book on behavioral clinical trial methods for chronic diseases. Having received over $75 million in NIH funding for studies focusing on lifestyle and cardio-metabolic diseases, she is among the top 5% of NIH grantees. She has mentored over 800 junior investigators in her roles as Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, and founding faculty member of the NIH Summer Institute for Behavioral Interventions, now in its 19th year. She is a leader in the applied behavioral medicine movement that aims to strengthen the quality of the evidence for the value of behavioral treatments in managing chronic diseases, and for their ability to cut healthcare costs by keeping people healthier across of their lifespan.
